Chef d'orchestre très jeune, il dirige les orchestres de Strasbourg, Liège, La Haye (où il fait représenter son opéra "Guillaume de Nassau"). Il dirige ensuite des opéras dans toute la France et se produit comme baryton. En 1843, il devient premier chef du grand théâtre de Bordeaux.
